The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom announced she is resigning on June 7. Theresa May has been under increasing pressure from both the opposition and her own Conservative Party to leave her post, as her government has failed to offer a plausible Brexit solution. The deal she negotiated with the European Union in November 2018 proved widely unpopular among legislators in the UK and failed several votes in Parliament. Afterwards May also did not manage to reach a compromise with Jeremy Corbyn and create a bipartisan agreement. Many members of her cabinet resigned in protest against the alternative agreement she is trying to craft, indicating that likely none of her suggestions will be well-liked in Parliament.
May will serve as Prime Minister for two more weeks, during which she will also receive Donald Trump. This time should give the country a bit of time to prepare for a transition. May will step down as leader of the Conservative Party, so the organization will need to elect a new one. According to the polls, Boris Johnson, a hard Brexiteer, has the greatest chance of succeeding May, though Dominic Raab is another popular name.
The United Kingdom is currently participating in EU elections and will also need to start preparing for a general election after May leaves her post. That will likely eat away a considerable amount of time from the Brexit clock and will leave the new government with less than six months to craft a brand-new agreement.
