The Federal Reserve will begin its two-day policy meeting later today, and it is anticipated that interest rates will remain steady. Following that, Fed Chair Jerome Powell is scheduled to give a press conference where he may reveal details about future US policy.
Later this week, investors will also be awaiting important US inflation data.
As of 17:22 GMT, the Dow Jones had down 289 points, or 0.7%, to 38,579, while the S&P 500 had dropped 0.3%, or 17 points, to 5343, and the NASDAQ had stabilized at 17,192.
